NAGPUR - This is the story of an Indian man, called Sanju Bhagat from Nagpur in India who carried the parasitic twin inside his stomach for 36 years.
This phenomenon actually occurs in 1 out of every 500,000 live births. It takes place very early in a twin pregnancy, when one fetus wraps around and envelopes the other. The dominant fetus develops normally, while its twin turns into a parasite feeding off its host twins blood supply. The parasitic has no brain and lacks most of the internal organs, being unable to survive on its own.
Usually both twins die before birth, but this did not happen in this case. If both survive, the parasitic twin grows so big that it starts to harm the host, which is when surgery is required.
The host twin can look pregnant as in Sanju’s case, where his stomach became so swollen that he looked about 9 months pregnant and was having difficulty breathing. Sanju has felt uncomfortable all his life because of his swollen belly, but in 1999 the situation worsened. One night in June of that year he was taken to hospital where doctors thought they would be operating on a giant tumour. “Basically the size of the tumour was so big that it was pressing on the diaphragm and that’s why he was very breathless. Because of the sheer size of the tumour, it makes it difficult [to operate]. We anticipated a lot of problems,” said Dr. Ajay Mehta of Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.
The doctor soon detected the tumour as the operation began, however, gallons of fluid began to spurt out as he cut deeper and then something strange happened. “To my surprise and horror, I could shake hands with somebody inside [Bhagat's body]. It was a bit shocking for me. He just put his hands inside and said there are bones inside [the belly]. First one limb came out and another limb came out. Then some part of genitalia, then some part of hair, some limbs, jaws, limbs, hair,” a colleague recalled.
At first glance it would have appeared as if Sanju had given birth but this was not the case. They had removed the twin brother of Sanju that had been there for nearly 40 years.
